What should an online mapping site be? To address this design problem, it was important to collect user data from various sources. Equally important was to research the [extensive] cognitive psychology literature available on orientation and way finding. Findings from both efforts indicated that new developments in online maps did improve certain mapping activities, but still failed to provide the basic features that users were demanding.
